The safety picture

A plain-language read of the sourced figures below

Valparaíso sits near the bottom of our index at 42 out of 100, safer than only about 12% of the cities we score.

Its homicide rate is 8.7 per 100,000, roughly five times the median for the cities we track. That number covers the wider municipality and was calculated by us from a count and a population, so it is not specific to any one part of the city. Recorded robbery is 547 per 100,000, and as police data it counts only reported incidents, so the true level is higher. The governments we track split on how to frame the risk: the US, Canada, and Australia each place Chile at increased caution, while the UK keeps it at its lowest level. Advisories also flag pickpocketing and scams. Resident sentiment is low too: in a national survey, 22.8% said they feel safe walking alone at night.

The radar shows the three sourced, comparable risk measures (homicide, robbery, the strictest travel-advisory level). Tourist petty-crime signals are a different kind of measure — how often advisories mention them — so they are shown as rows under Tourist-specific incidents, not as radar axes.

Homicide / general violence

Intentional homicides (per 100,000)
8.7/100k
CEAD "Homicidios" are police-recorded casos policiales by comuna. Chile's reconciled homicide-victims registry (Fiscalía / SML, prevenciondehomicidios.cl) counts somewhat higher (e.g. ~46 vs 28 for Comuna de Santiago in 2024). This headline is the police-recorded case count, comparable to the police series used for peer cities.
