Santiago scores 46 out of 100 in our index, safer than only about 13% of the cities we score.

The homicide rate is 5.1 per 100,000, a little over three times the median, though it covers the wider municipality, was derived by us from a count and a population, and rests on a definition that does not exactly match our standard. Robbery is recorded at a very high 1,138.5 per 100,000, and that number carries several caveats: it is police-reported and so a floor, the population denominator is uncertain, and it covers the municipality. On advisories, the US, Canada, and Australia each set Chile at their second level, increased caution, while the UK holds it at its lowest. Each advisory flags pickpocketing and scams. In a survey, just 22.8% of people said they feel safe walking alone at night, a country-wide figure that lines up with the elevated recorded crime.
