The safety picture
A plain-language read of the sourced figures belowMadrid scores 79 out of 100 in our composite index, safer than 43% of the cities we score.
Its homicide rate is 0.3 per 100,000, but that figure is reported for the wider region rather than the city, and we calculated it from a raw count and a population, so read it as an upper bound. Recorded robbery is 155.7 per 100,000, also a regional figure and computed the same way; police data counts only reported incidents, so the real level is somewhat higher. The four governments we track split mildly: the US and Canada put Spain at their second level, increased caution, while the UK and Australia hold it at their lowest. Every advisory covering the country flags pickpocketing and scams aimed at visitors. In a city survey, 69% of residents said they feel safe walking alone at night.
