The safety picture

A plain-language read of the sourced figures below

Guatemala City sits near the bottom of our index at 34 out of 100, with only about 6% of scored cities ranking below it.

Its homicide rate is 46.4 per 100,000, roughly 29 times the median for the cities we track, and that number covers the municipality and was calculated by us from a count and a population. Recorded robbery is 68.1 per 100,000, also a derived municipal rate, and because police data counts only reported incidents the true level is higher. The four governments disagree on how far to go. The US places Guatemala at its third level, reconsider travel, the most cautious, while Canada, the UK, and Australia each hold it a step lower at increased caution. Advisories for the country name pickpocketing and scams aimed at visitors. We hold no resident survey on night-time safety here.

The radar shows the three sourced, comparable risk measures (homicide, robbery, the strictest travel-advisory level). Tourist petty-crime signals are a different kind of measure — how often advisories mention them — so they are shown as rows under Tourist-specific incidents, not as radar axes.

Robbery (police-recorded)

Robbery (per 100,000)
68.1/100k
Police-recorded robbery (PNC) substantially undercounts true incidence — Guatemala has a high share of unreported crime (cifra negra). Read this as recorded robbery, not total robbery.
Sums all Guatemalan penal "robo" offence codes (force/threat; ICCS 0401), including vehicle and motorcycle robbery — broader than a pure robbery-of-persons series, so only loosely comparable to peer cities.
