The safety picture

A plain-language read of the sourced figures below

Frankfurt scores 71 out of 100 in our composite index, safer than 38% of the cities we rank.

Both crime figures here are measured for the city itself. The homicide rate is 2.19 per 100,000, above the median for the cities we track, though the underlying definition differs somewhat from our standard, so compare it with that in mind. Recorded robbery is 164.61 per 100,000, and because police data counts only reported incidents, the real figure runs higher. The four governments we track split: the US and Canada set Germany at increased caution, while the UK and Australia keep it at their lowest level. Every advisory covering the country names pickpocketing and scams directed at travellers. In a national survey, 72.1% of residents said they feel safe walking alone after dark.

The radar shows the three sourced, comparable risk measures (homicide, robbery, the strictest travel-advisory level). Tourist petty-crime signals are a different kind of measure — how often advisories mention them — so they are shown as rows under Tourist-specific incidents, not as radar axes.

Homicide / general violence

Intentional homicides (per 100,000)
2.19/100k
PKS records "Mord, Totschlag und Tötung auf Verlangen" as CASES including attempts (Versuche are 55–94 % of recorded cases). To compare with UNODC ICCS 0101 completed intentional homicide, project-atlas subtracted attempts and scaled the recorded-crime rate (HZ) by the completed share. Headline = completed homicides per 100,000.

Robbery (police-recorded)

Robbery (per 100,000)
164.61/100k
Police-recorded robbery (PKS erfasste Fälle) undercounts true incidence — a share of robberies go unreported. Read this as recorded robbery, not total robbery.
