The safety picture

A plain-language read of the sourced figures below

Florence scores 81 out of 100 in our composite index, placing it just below the midpoint of the cities we rank.

Its homicide rate is 0.5 per 100,000, about a third of the median for the cities we track, though that figure covers the wider metro area and we calculated it ourselves from a count and a population, so read it as an upper bound. Robbery is recorded at 110.9 per 100,000, also a metro figure and drawn from police reports, which count only what people report. The four governments we track split slightly: the US and Canada set Italy at increased caution, while the UK and Australia hold it at their lowest level. Every advisory that covers the country flags pickpocketing and scams aimed at visitors. In a national survey, 76% of residents said they feel safe walking alone at night.

The radar shows the three sourced, comparable risk measures (homicide, robbery, the strictest travel-advisory level). Tourist petty-crime signals are a different kind of measure — how often advisories mention them — so they are shown as rows under Tourist-specific incidents, not as radar axes.
