The safety picture

A plain-language read of the sourced figures below

Athens scores 97 out of 100 in our index, safer than 82% of the cities we score.

The homicide rate is 0.9 per 100,000, about 0.6 times the median we track, but it covers the wider metro area, pools more than one year, and was calculated by us from a count and a population, so take it as an approximate upper bound. Robbery is recorded at 45.5 per 100,000, a metro figure that police data understates. All four governments, the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia, hold Greece at their lowest advisory level, and each still names pickpocketing and scams that can affect visitors. One point stands out: a city survey found only 40% of Athens residents feel safe walking alone at night, a much more cautious read than the recorded crime figures suggest.

The radar shows the three sourced, comparable risk measures (homicide, robbery, the strictest travel-advisory level). Tourist petty-crime signals are a different kind of measure — how often advisories mention them — so they are shown as rows under Tourist-specific incidents, not as radar axes.
