Fixing the site on a phone
The navigation folds into a menu, comparison columns swipe sideways, and buttons are big enough to actually tap — the site now behaves the way it should on a small screen.
Last post I said I was getting back to the site. First job done: it now behaves properly on a phone.
If you had opened it on a phone before this week, you would have found every page drifting off to the right — you could swipe sideways and the layout just kept going. It came down to the navigation bar along the top, which was built for a desktop window and had no smaller version to fall back on. It did not fit, so it shoved everything else across. Now it folds into a menu button, the way it should have from the start.
The comparison view had its own version of the same problem. Line up four cities on a phone and each one was squeezed into a sliver too narrow to read. Those columns now slide sideways on their own, so you can swipe through the cities while the rest of the page stays where it is.
A few smaller irritations went with it. Buttons and checkboxes were too small to hit reliably with a thumb, so they are bigger now. Tapping the city filter or a feedback field used to make the screen lurch and zoom in, which is gone too. And city pages like Bogotá stack their figures one below the other instead of trying to sit side by side.
Not glamorous work. But this site is meant to be something you check while you are actually travelling, which mostly means on a phone — so it should have worked there first.
